The concept
Leuven Language Buddies is a language practice group based in Leuven, Belgium.
The goal of this group is to bring people together to not only practice speaking in their target language, but to also make friends. Are you a native speaker and just want to chat? Your presence is highly appreciated!
There are admins who take care of the group, but the events are made by its members, which includes you! It’s simple: if no one organizes a get-together, nothing happens. Please visit the Events tab for upcoming events, and how to start something yourself. Find other members and interact with them through the Socials tab.
History
The group was created on Facebook on the 28th of October 2020 by Kevin Erken.
“I created this group as a way to combat the loneliness I felt as a newcomer in Leuven. Little did I know, this small initiative would grow into a vibrant community filled with laughter, connection, and memories that I will carry with me forever. From city trips to picnics in the park, from language tables to spontaneous chats over coffee, this group has brought me some of the most beautiful moments of my life. It has given me friends who feel like family and a sense of belonging I will always cherish.”
On the 23rd of January 2025, Kevin decided to step down and left the group in the hands of Hansel Bontemps.
“This choice wasn’t easy. Leuven Language Buddies has been such an important part of my life, and I’ve poured my time, energy, and love into helping it grow into what it is today. But now feels like the right moment to step back and make room for new energy and perspectives. Though I won’t be managing the group anymore, you’ll still see me pop by the language tables from time to time—I’m not saying goodbye, just taking a step into a new chapter. Thank you to every single one of you who has made this journey so special. Leuven Language Buddies wouldn’t be what it is without your warmth, openness, and shared love of connection. I have no doubt the group will continue to thrive under Hansel’s care, and I can’t wait to see the beautiful memories you guys will create.”
